Behavioural Basics

  • A leader's behaviour has a profound and direct effect on the results achieved with his or her team.   Understanding how this occurs, and the ability to direct this knowledge towards success, is fundamental to improved performance.
  • Based upon the work of psychologist BF Skinner, an appreciation of the antecedent-behaviour-consequence (ABC) chain will touch every facet of your company's accomplishments.

Behaviour

  • Behaviour is the things you say and the things you do. This is the aspect of a person's performance which can be shaped by understanding and applying behavioural management techniques.
  • It is important to note that it is the behaviour of the leader within an organisation which will shape other people's behaviour. The things the leader does not say or do are also influential on shaping other people's behaviour.

Antecedents

  • An antecedent has the power to initiate or trigger a behaviour.  Examples of antecedents are instructions, setting expectations, training or clues in the environment such as a memo or a poster.  Antecedents will not cause a behaviour to recur.

Consequences

  • An event that follows a behaviour, a consequence, has the power to cause the behaviour to recur by encouraging or reinforcing it.  A consequence can also discourage a behaviour by punishing it or ignoring it.  The correct use of reinforcing consequences (R+) will lead to discretionary behaviour in your employees, and it is this 'want to do' attitude which will lead to excellent performance. 
  • The consequences you provide will characterise your leadership.  The most influential reinforcing consequence available to a leader is feedback.
